A Modern Fairytale by Mikaela Atkins

  • Aug. 15th, 2007 at 4:48 PM

i'd like to tell you all a little story

How to hang on happily ever after
(or Prince Peter and the Seven Liberals)
please bear in mind I wrote this last year for a Year 10 assessment task, and some political satire may be a little out of date. But i got 10/10 for it, so I'm not complaining.

Once upon a time in a land where every house had a white picket fence and every family had a mummy, daddy and 2.5 children, where everyone lived happily in fear of some unknown danger, always alert but never alarmed, there lived a little man. A little unattractive man with big eyebrows, a small minded man with big ideas, who was so humble and honest he had managed to dispatch all the previous leaders of the land.

Now as King John he lived in Castle Bennelong with Queen Janette and ruled with the help of his old ally, Prince Peter. Prince Peter was a poor specimen of a prince, but well endowed with a gift for making money. He spent all of his time in the kingdom's treasury, and his favourite past time was counting King John's money. There was a lot of it, because King John rarely gave any away, and he was very fond of imposing taxes.

But King John had one treasure he didn't keep in the treasury. It was his most prized possesion, a magic, full length mirror. It stood at least five feet tall, and leaned very far to the right. Every morning and every night, just after his twice daily walk, King John would stand in front of his mirror and say:

"Mirror, mirror standing tall,
Who will reign longest of all?"

And every morning and ever night, the mirror would reply:

"Well King Menzies gave it his best shot
And you helped finish King Malcolm's spot
And as for Prince Hewson and Prince Peacock
You started the rot
So I guess that it's suprising not
That you will reign longest of all
Till Prince Peter causes you to fall."

Suprising to day, this did not make King John particularly happy, so he decided to get rid of Prince Peter too. Let's face it, when you turn back the clock thirty years, you have plenty of time to think about who should be the leader.

So King John called Prince Peter into his throne room and made him an offer he couldn't refuse. He told Prince Peter that he too could be king one day, btu he would need to practise. He suggested he go a long way away, to a quiet place called The Great Backwoods, where he could practise being king til his hearts content with no distractions.

Prince Peter, who was very tired of counting money, and who was very fallible, thought this was a great idea, and set off immediately for The Great Backwoods.

There he practised walking with a crown, but no one noticed. He practised making big speeches to no one in particular, he practised passing laws for all the butterflies and beetles, and went for lots of long walks in his personalised tracksuit.

One day he meandered so far he became completely lost, and eventually came to a small clearing, where he saw a little house. He was very tired of his own company and being king of nothing, so he was very keen to make friends with the occupants of the house. Perhaps they would even vote for him to be king!

The occupants of the house had been so bored with what they were doing, which was filling out their personal income tax forms, that they had gone over to a friends place to play dominos.

When Prince Peter entered the house, he saw the half finished income tax forms, and couldn't help himself. He completed them all: there were seven of them all together. Exhausted with work and tired with hunger he looked around and saw seven little beds all in a row.

As fell across the little beds, his last waking thought was to wonder if these seven little strangers were living together as some sort of social welfare rip off, or clever tax dodge scheme.

Sorry to finish that last post so abruptly, but my charming mother returned home and I wasn't sure if I was allowed on the computer. Anyway, my mother brought me home some cough medicine, and I would just ike to know, WOULD IT KILL SOMEONE TO MAKE A COUGH MEDICINE THAT DIDN'T TASTE LIKE CRAP!!!!

Moving on, exciting news about rocko. As you probably don't know, a few years back my school did a really controversial rocko piece about the war in Iraq and George Bush. Anyway, this year we are doing a sequel. And as I have been picked to be the first speaker from my school, I get to explain why, to a huge complex full of people. and if we go to the finals, to the whole Entertainment Centre. Fun Fun.

I guess it's not that bad, because I support the view expressed in our piece, but it is going to be a tad interesting.

SO... I have also been roped into performing a dance at this performance night thingy my mother has organinsed.....and i have until saturday night to be ready. Again, it should be interesting. Lots of impro, i reckon :)

If anyone is reading this, leave me a comment.
If not, I know where you live.

  • Jul. 31st, 2007 at 5:11 PM

this past week has been rather busy, I have been off 'shredding the slopes', learning how to ski from a VERY cute french instrustor. Gotta love school camps haha.
So yes, life is rather busy with school and the like, I have to make a speech about world vision in assembly tomorrow, I have an Italian assessment test, then on Thursday we have our Rock Eisteddofd heat in Homebush, which should be fun. Not to mention the fact I got a cold while I was at the snow, so I'm not feeling too crash hot.

my holidays finish soon, and yet all i've been doing pretty much is working. get this, i;\'ve been working three jobs this holidays, and i'm off to work tonight at the fruit and veggie shop, dad's work tomorrow, and the hairdressers on saturday.
but i get to go skiing in 2 weeks for the first time, though i'm a bit nervous about the whole ski lift part...I'm terrified of heights, so it should be interesting.

so yes...school is approaching, harry potter is out at the movies and soon to arrive in a bookstore near you, there's a feast and tourney on the saturday after Jindy, which is good coz i get to have an awesome time AND miss out on work :) haha

well anyway, this was, as usuual, pretty pointless, but fun nonetheless, and i have to scoot off to work...yay :S

ps did you know that in 2005 there was a vampire scare in england? for real, rumours were going around that vampires were roaming the streets
and in malawi in 2003 (i think) four people got bashed up and one guy stoned to death coz people thought they were vampires.
pretty crazy, hey

I'm looking for someone to go see Dead Caesar with. Would you guys (Fern and Stewart) be interested?

holidays

I'm sitting at a desk at my mother's work, supposedly working on my english ext assessment task on Dracula, but there is only so much blood-sucking, gory descriptions and decomposing bodies i can take. Either that or I just really cant be bothered to do any more. The sad part is, I think it's the latter.

Anyway, I'm on 'holidays', although all I've done so far is school related stuff, and take my dog for a walk to, guess what, pick up a movie I have to watch for school. Interview with the Vampire. Not really my kind of movie....  though I did like the part where Lestat, played by Tom Cruise, says about Claudia (the evil little girl vampire, played by kirsten dunst) being an only child. I guess you kind of have to watch it. Or the whole 'not in the house' thing. Again, I think you have to watch it.

So yes.....school holidays. I put some new stuff on my ipod yesterday, notably Martin Pearson's Unfinishedv Spelling Errors of Bolkien. Classic stuff. Had me in stitches for ages. I also cooked dinner last night, fettuccine with some special cheese, macadamia nut and garlic/basil sauce, and meatballs. Tasted a little funny though. I went and painted sets for rock eisteddfod, and Mr Peade laughed at me wearing my flanny, cut-offs and black snow/space boot things. (I don't know what they're called, I bought them when Rose and I were stranded in Cooma and I was only wearing shorts, a t-shirt and thongs. Not particularly clever.)

I have to show my parents my report tonight. Not really looking forward to it, as i went pretty bad in Chemistry, but oh well, i was planning on dropping it and picking up History Extension anyway.

Oh and I'm geting a cold. Not fun.

well, I better go, so stay safe and have fun

so... assessments finally finished and handed in, although i have another in english on friday. i've added another few words to my vocabulary, including laconic, which Mr Rule used in Modern yesterday. i've also decided i want another cat, which i've yet to inform my parents. I want a black cat, so i can either call it Tybalt, Othello or Slinky Malinky hehe
life is just as boring as ever, although i compered the Sydney North Dance Festival again yesterday night, and yeah.....
nothing to interesting to note, apart from our France trip is going ahead for Modern
and holidays in a week!!
oh and i wrote a letter to my mum....felt good

I'm tired, and bored and sore. We had another performance last night for the Sydney North Dance Festival, which was pretty cool, but our dance, which is called Womansong, is extrememly tiring, although we do get to wear pretty grey dresses. so it's almost worth it.

So...my life isn't entirely fascinating, I'm 16, in year 11, doing Ext English, Ext Maths, Chemistry, Modern History, Legal Studies and Italian, although i hope to drop chemistry next year and pick up Ext History. i have 5 assessments at the moment, one for modern and one for legal studies that are both due on monday, and ive only partially started my legal one, one in class on Friday for English Advanced which i have to prepare for, one due 1st week back next term for Ext English, and one due week 4 next term for chemistry.

I am currently trying to save to go on two overseas trips with school, to Japan later this year for dance, and to france next year for modern. I work two jobs to try and save, at a hairdressers on the weekend, and at a fruit and veggie shop on thurday nights.

I have holidays in a week, and i can't wait.

i have three friends on here, so this whole thing is rather pointless, but fun nonetheless

and i am now an expert on the Juvenile Justice Act of 1992 and the amendments made in 1996, 1998 and 2002, and black resistance to Apartheid in South Africa from 1949 to 1977.

my life is fun :S
